| New HIV/AIDS surveillance data for the European Region | ||

| Nearly 51 600 people in the WHO European Region were newly diagnosed as infected with HIV in 2008, more than double the annual rate in 2000. In the 43 countries in the Region that consistently reported HIV surveillance data during this period, the infection rate rose from 41 to 89 cases per million population, according to HIV/AIDS surveillance in Europe 2008, a report released today. | ||

| New recommendations on HIV treatment, prevention and infant feeding | ||

| Newly released recommendations on treatment, prevention and infant feeding in the context of HIV, based on the latest scientific evidence, now recommend earlier initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for adults and adolescents, the delivery of more patient-friendly antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), and prolonged use of ARVs to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. For the first time, WHO recommends that HIV-positive mothers or their infants take ARVs while breastfeeding to prevent HIV transmission. | ||

| New AIDS epidemic update released | ||

| Data from the newly released 2009 AIDS Epidemic Update show that estimated 33.4 million [31.1 million–35.8 million] people live with HIV worldwide, while the new HIV infections have been reduced by 17% over the past eight years. According to the report, an estimated 2.9 million lives have been saved since the availability of effective treatment in 1996. The report was released on 24 November 2009 by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and WHO. | ||
