The country profiles present epidemiological data on HIV/AIDS for all 53 Member States of the WHO European Region. Figures in the country profiles are primarily derived from:

  • European Centre for the Epidemiological Monitoring of AIDS (EuroHIV) end-year report for 2006 (report no. 75);
  • Data collected in the annual WHO European Regional Office for Europe survey on HIV/AIDS and antiretroviral therapy;
  • WHO/Europe Centralized Information System for Infectious Diseases (CISID); and
  • European HIV prevalence database.

Where possible, the country profiles have been reviewed and updated by national governmental and community-based experts.

Where relevant and available, hepatitis, syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that facilitate the transmission and acquisition of HIV are also reported. Outbreaks and high or increasing levels of STIs highlight the continuing importance of efforts to raise awareness of risk behaviours and to prevent and control hepatitis and other STIs, especially among vulnerable populations.
