The Director General of WHO in his Note Verbale dated 15 March 2019 was honoured to announce 6 candidates for the post of Regional Director of the European Region.

One of the 6 candidates, a WHO EURO staff member Dr Nedret Emiroglu has therefore taken administrative leave until the election taking place at the 69th Regional Committee scheduled in Copenhagen in September 2019.

The functional domain of Dr Nedret Emiroglu will be temporarily covered as follows:

Dr Masoud Dara is a physician and a public health specialist from Belgium. In addition to having significant clinical experience in infectious diseases, he has completed several postgraduate studies, including courses at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Harvard School of Public Health.

In 1998–2001, Dr Dara worked as a medical doctor and programme manager for Médecins Sans Frontières in central Asia and as the head of the Belgian Red Cross in Kosovo. He worked as a WHO medical officer in the Russian Federation from 2001 to 2003, providing technical assistance to national health authorities on tuberculosis (TB) and TB/HIV. In 2003– 2010, he worked as a senior consultant for the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation in several WHO regions, mainly in the fields of TB, TB/HIV and infection prevention and control.

Since 2008, Dr Dara has chaired the TB Control in Prisons Working Group at the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. He has served as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease since February 2015, and joined the Editorial Board of Eurosurveillance in September 2018. From 2010 to 2014, he led the WHO/Europe TB and Multidrug/Extensively Drug-Resistant TB (M/XDR-TB) Programme, and from 2014 to 2016, worked as Senior Advisor for Communicable Diseases, Health Emergencies and Humanitarian Response, based in the WHO Office at the European Union in Brussels. In October 2016, Dr Dara was appointed as Coordinator, Communicable Diseases, and Programme Manager of the Joint Tuberculosis, HIV and Viral Hepatitis Programme at WHO/Europe.

Since March 2019, Dr Dara has been Acting Director, Communicable Diseases at WHO/Europe.
