Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, nominated for second term

Yesterday, WHO’s Executive Board nominated Dr Chan for a second term as Director-General. The nomination will be submitted for approval to the Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly, scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland on 21–26 May 2012.

The Director-General is WHO’s chief technical and administrative officer and oversees the policy for its work.

If confirmed by the World Health Assembly, Dr Chan will begin her new term on 1 July 2012 and serve until 30 June 2017.

Other issues under discussion at the Executive Board’s 130th session include WHO reform, chronic diseases, emergencies, mental health, the Millennium Development Goals, nutrition and poliomyelitis. The session is taking place in Geneva on 16–23 January.
