New policy summary – Economic crisis, health systems and health in Europe

Even in time of austerity, policy-makers have choices and can influence the effect of an economic shock on population health and the health system.

This is one of the lessons from a joint study by WHO/Europe and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies that analyses the impact of health-policy responses to the economic crisis in Europe.

The study demonstrates how strong governance and leadership at both the national and international levels are key to mitigating the negative effects of a crisis and improving health systems’ performance.
