The HiT in brief review for Luxembourg reveals some room for efficiency gains
The current Luxembourg Presidency of the EU has put the spotlight on the relatively little known health system in the Grand Duchy. Among all European countries Luxembourg allocates the highest per capita spending in PPP to health. Its performance in terms of high life expectancy, low infant mortality and low out-of-pocket payments is better than the European average. However, in the hospital sector a persistent high level of average length of stay combined with low occupancy rates signal room for efficiency gains. Furthermore, a lacking capacity to train health personnel and shortages in some specialty care necessitates a generous policy towards receiving care abroad.
