Challenges to health care coverage in Tajikistan

The new HiT on Tajikistan outlines the challenges facing the country, which is one of the poorest in the WHO European Region. Tajikistan also has the lowest health expenditure per capita in the Region, although the government has stated that it aims to double public expenditure on health by 2020. A number of reforms designed to improve financial protection and efficiency are still at pilot stage and have not yet been rolled out nationally. Meanwhile private out-of-pocket payments remain the main source of financing, preventing poorer groups of the population from accessing health services.
