Regional Director delivers annual lecture to Faculty of Public Health
Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, addressed public health specialists from the United Kingdom today, delivering the annual lecture to the Faculty of Public Health.
Noting the proud tradition of public health in the United Kingdom, Ms Jakab spoke of the need to strengthen public health and health systems across Europe; the interrelationship between health and human development; and how to combine knowledge and action in public health in the modern context.
In order to address current public health challenges, WHO/Europe is developing a new European Health Policy, Health 2020, in collaboration with relevant partners. Ms Jakab explained that this new policy will renew the Region’s focus and rejuvenate commitment to public health capacity, functions and services, with commitment to and investment in disease prevention and health promotion. To achieve this, Zsuzsanna Jakab called on the Faculty and its members to take an active part in developing the policy.
The Faculty of Public Health is the standard setting body for specialists in public health in the United Kingdom. It works to improve the public’s health through three key areas of activity: education and standards; professional affairs; and advocacy and policy. It is a Faculty of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom with over 3000 members.
