Regional Director speaks at World Health Summit

Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, spoke of the development of a European health policy, Health 2020, in a global context during her address at the Summit in Berlin, Germany.

She said that global health is usually considered in terms of communicable disease threats, but that this perception is changing. Global health is also interlinked with trade, food, water, environment, finance and energy challenges. As such, Ms Jakab stated, “Global health is at the cross-roads of global agendas concerning security, economic development and social justice, and increasingly health will be seen as a strategic driver of security, foreign and development policy”.

The Regional Director also spoke of health disparities in Europe, the main health challenges facing the Region and how WHO/Europe’s work contributes to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
