Director-General presents tobacco-control award to Turkmenistan

Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, presented Mr Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, President of Turkmenistan, with the Director-General’s Special Recognition certificate for contributions to global tobacco control on 11 June 2014.

The Director-General and Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, are making an official visit to Turkmenistan on 11–12 June. On the first day, they discussed with the President areas of current and future collaboration between WHO and Turkmenistan.

The meeting was followed by a lecture to teaching staff and students of the Turkmen State Medical University and Institute of International Relations of Turkmenistan. The Director-General delivered a presentation on global health diplomacy and the Regional Director spoke about tobacco control in the WHO European Region.

Current collaboration and future plans were also discussed at a meeting with Mr Sapardurdy Toylyev, Deputy Head of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, and Mr Nurmuhammet Amannepesov, Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan.
The first day also included a field visit to a primary health care facility in the village of Babarap and “Ene Myahri”, a maternity centre in Geokdepe district, Ahal province: both are newly built.

Today, the Director-General and the Regional Director are attending the opening ceremony for a new technical park and events related to Science Day in Turkmenistan. In addition, a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will cover Turkmenistan’s involvement in global health diplomacy.
