Minister of Health of Cyprus visits WHO/Europe

On 1 December 2011, Dr Stavros Malas paid an official visit to WHO/Europe. He met with Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, who officially welcomed him and briefed him on WHO/Europe’s work, commitments made by Member States and possible areas for further collaboration. Ms Jakab also presented the Minister with a red ribbon to mark World AIDS Day.

The visit enabled Dr Malas to learn more about the range of WHO/Europe’s work through presentations by divisional directors and programme managers.

Cyprus will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in July–December 2012. During the Presidency, the Ministry of Health plans to focus on health security, healthy ageing and innovative approaches to health care.

Fruitful discussions were held on these areas and the possibility of using WHO expertise to support Presidency-related activities. Before visiting WHO/Europe, Dr Malas had held talks with the Danish Minister of Health, Ms Astrid Krag, as Denmark will hold the Presidency in January–June 2012.

The visit concluded with a reiteration of the importance of good collaboration and the possibility of framing this collaboration in a more formal manner.
