Officials of the Ministry of Health of Cyprus – in the presence of Dr Petrides Petros, the Minister, and Dr Lucianne Licari, Executive Manager, Country Relations and Corporate Communications at WHO/Europe – discussed the development and timeline of a country cooperation strategy between the Ministry and WHO on 25 October 2013.

Dr Petros explained that the strategy should be used to promote interregional collaboration, and described Cyprus’ potential contribution the network of small island states, which would also reflect the country’s stronger relationship with China.

Specific priorities to be included in the strategy include strengthening universal health coverage, health financing and pharmaceuticals, and integrating national policies with Health 2020, the European health policy framework.

It was agreed that the final strategy would be launched in spring 2014.

Country cooperation strategies highlight opportunities and challenges for stronger cooperation between a country and the WHO Secretariat. Switzerland became the first country in the WHO European Region to sign such a strategy in May 2013.
