The meeting on 20–21 June 2016 kicks off a series of technical consultations supporting the development of a European action plan for sustainable health workforce.

On 20–21 June 2016, an expert meeting organized by the human resources for health programme at WHO/Europe kicked off a series of technical consultations supporting the development of a European action plan for a sustainable health workforce. The action plan will take forward the Global Strategy for Human Resources for Health: Workforce 2030 within the WHO European Region.

The action plan will set out key strategic objectives, priority action areas and tasks for implementation at regional and country levels. It will take account of regional strategic directions and health priorities, notably those linked to Health 2020, a European policy framework supporting action across government and society for health and well-being.

The expert meeting was hosted by the WHO Collaborating Centre on Human resources for Health Development at the Health Services Management Training Centre, Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary.

The expert group has discussed strategic priorities for human resources for health in the context of the European Region, and implications of the Global Strategy for European Member States. An outline of the action plan content and the development process have been defined and agreed. A draft action plan will be consulted with Member States and relevant partners.

The final draft action plan will be submitted for consideration at the 67th session of the Regional Committee for Europe in September 2017.
