Press conference draws attention to low tobacco taxation in Kazahstan

A special press conference was held in Astana on 31 May 2012 to mark World No Tobacco Day. The event was organized by the Healthy Lifestyle Centre, with collaboration from the Ministry of Health.

Low tobacco taxation in Kazakhstan was highlighted as one of the main reasons for the tobacco epidemic in the country. Speakers also stressed the importance of recognizing tobacco industry interference and complying with Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), which requires Parties to the FCTC to take steps to prevent interference by the tobacco industry in public health policies.

The press conference was well attended by the media, despite other high-level political events taking place at the same time in Astana. Media messages focused on tobacco statistics and the low tobacco taxation.
