Conference on the role of evidence-based medicine in health care and medical education

A conference on the role of evidence-based medicine (EBM) in improving health care quality and enhancing medical education took place on 7 May 2014 in Tajikistan for health professionals and representatives of medical educational institutions in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, as well as representatives of international organizations.

The conference focussed on 4 main topics:

  • integration of evidence-based medicine in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education;
  • the role of EBM to improve quality of care;
  • development and implementation of evidence-based clinical guidelines; and
  • problems and barriers in promotion and use of EBM.

The participants also endorsed a resolution that EBM should be further promoted in health professionals’ communities and throughout medical academia. The process of developing, adopting and implementing guidelines should be further strengthened and institutionalized in efforts to achieve universal coverage by high-quality health services.

The conference was part of the European Union funded project “Technical support in support of health care reform in Republic of Tajikistan,” and received further support through the partnerships of the Quality Health Care Project, funded by the United States Agency for International Development and the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit.
