WHO Regional Director for Europe arrives in Kazakhstan on four-day official visit
WHO Regional Director for Europe, Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, is on a four-day official visit to Kazakhstan. The highlight of the visit is the opening of the WHO Office on Primary Health Care in Almaty.
The Office will help promote primary health care on the international political agenda and will bring together expertise to support WHO Member States in tackling health system challenges, including inequities and inefficiencies in health care. The opening of the Centre, which will also be attended by officials from the Kazakh Ministry of Health and Social Development, is part of the Region’s commitment to implement the WHO European policy framework Health 2020.
The Kazakh Government offered to host the new Office at the annual session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in September 2013. The offer was unanimously accepted by all 53 Member States.
As part of the visit, Dr Jakab will attend events in Almaty and Astana and will meet high-level officials, including representatives of the President’s Office and the Government, the mayors of Almaty and Astana, Kazakh health workers, as well as partners from United Nations agencies working in the country.
During the visit, the Regional Director will also participate in a senior policy seminar “Transforming Health Services Delivery in Kazakhstan”, which will focus on key primary health care developments in the country in 2016 – 2020. The seminar is part of the WHO flagship course on “Primary health care fit for 21st century” jointly organized by WHO Europe, the Kazakh Ministry of Health and Social Development and the World Bank.
