Public debate on health system financing in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

On 7 December 2013, 100 representatives of medical and patient associations as well as public health experts and government officials attended the second WHO-supported national health summit organized by the Healthgrouper project in Skopje, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The event provided the opportunity for open and public debate on the difficult decisions facing the national Health Insurance Fund and the Ministry of Health related to the allocation of funds in the health sector.

As a direct outcome of the summit, Minister of Health Nikola Todorov published on 10 December 2013 an open call for establishing a Council for Public Health, whose main objective will be to define areas in which scientific research is most needed to support policy making in this area.

Among the high-level speakers and attendees at the summit were the Minister of Health, the Director of the Health Insurance Fund Mrs Maja Paranardjieva Zmejkova, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Norman Daniels from the Harvard School of Public Health and professors from universities in Albania and Bulgaria.  A video presentation on the social determinants of health by Christine Brown was also presented.

A detailed report along with a video documentary on the event will be available online soon.
