Romania holds Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Romania is holding the first 6 months of the new Trio Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which started on 1 January 2019, to be followed by Finland (July–December 2019) and Croatia (January–June 2020).

In their 18-month common programme, these 3 countries have underlined the need to strengthen and sustain the multilateral system and to focus on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development within and beyond the European Union (EU). Further, the Trio Presidency will organize the work of the Council according to the outcome of a Summit of Heads of State and Government, planned to take place in Sibiu, on 9 May, Europe Day, organized by the Romanian Presidency to steer the debate on the future of Europe.

The motto of the Romanian Presidency is "Cohesion as a common European value", understood as unity, equal treatment and convergence, a Union that leaves no member country and no citizen behind.

With elections for the European Parliament planned for 23–26 May 2019, the current legislative cycle is coming to an end. In this context, there is increased pressure to finalize many legislative dossiers.

In relation to health, Romania will work with the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO) to focus on 5 priorities: antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and associated infections, for which Council conclusions will be proposed for adoption on 14 June 2019; vaccination; patients’ access to medicines; mobility of patients; and digital health. Moreover, the Romanian Presidency will address issues on increasing road safety through digitalization (20–21 March) and on emergencies preparation and response.

Specific meetings during the Romanian Presidency will include a focus on AMR (1 March), EPSCO meetings of health ministers (15–16 April and on 14 June), a workshop on vaccination (9–10 May), a meeting addressing cancer (29–30 May) and the e-Health Week (11–13 June).
