National campaign for increasing organ donation in Serbia – national transplant programme

In 2010 WHO has started intensive collaboration with the Ministry of Health to support Serbia to set up its national organ transplantation programme and become a member of EUROTRANSPLANT programme by the end of the year. In the first phase WHO will provide expertise in the process of setting up the National Administration for Biomedicine that will be managing the programme. Today in Serbia there are 1144 persons waiting for kidney transplants, 50 waiting for liver transplants and 5 waiting for heart transplants. Fourteen children are waiting for organs from cadaver donors. Serbia adopted the Law on Organ transplant in 2009.
