Tajikistan hosts international conference on response measures to HIV/AIDS

The government of Tajikistan and international organizations, including WHO/Europe, convened a regional scientific conference on preventive measures to HIV/AIDS in CIS countries on 5-6 December 2011, in Dushanbe. The main focus of the conference was discussion related to the creation and improvement of effective measures in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The opening of the meeting included keynote speeches from Ms Bobokhojaeva L.S, Presidential Office of the Republic of Tajikistan, Dr Jobirova S.B, First Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Pavel Ursu, WHO Representative, Tajikistan and United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator a.i ., as well as Mr Ken Gross, United States Ambassador to Tajikistan.

Key elements of the discussion were:

  • the role of the implementation of the HIV/AIDS programme by the National Coordination Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (NCC);
  • Tajikistan's achievements in the field of prevention of this epidemic;
  • development of a regional action plan; and
  • the epidemiological situation of HIV infection among labour migrants.

The first day of the event included a session for local and foreign mass media.

“We must be clear about priorities, and focus on the health system strengthening of the country and contribute to its development. It is crucial to note that identifying the most effective health strategies in different settings, in particular in response to HIV/AIDS is one of the basic tools for achieving the results and set goals, ” said Ms Bobokhojaeva L.S, Presidential Office of Republic of Tajikistan.

“Joint work of all partners, organizations and sectors of society will play a crucial role in responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We need to think about linking the work at the country level with enabling actions at a global level,” noted Mr Ken Gross, United States Ambassador to Tajikistan.

“We need to continue our efforts in mobilizing the resources and building the national capacity, ensuring the public awareness and better quality of services, which are the main components of the development and health system strengthening. I call to all countries, which are attending this conference to align their national action plans and the HIV/AIDS strategies with the newly adopted European Action Plan on HIV/AIDS 2012-2015,” highlighted Dr Pavel Ursu. In addition, in his capacity as UN Resident Coordinator a.i., Dr Pavel Ursu stressed the importance of the UN role in Tajikistan in the field of HIV/AIDS and technical assistance to the country in the adoption and implementation of the plans for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

As a result of this conference, a resolution will be adopted. The conference will also be a key element in the promotion of the objectives and targets in strengthening Tajikistan’s health systems, and achieving results in combating such problems as HIV/AIDS.
