United Nations Day celebration in Tajikistan

Representatives from all 23 UN agencies in Tajikistan at a press conference on UN Day, 24 October 2012

To celebrate United Nations Day in Tajikistan a special press conference was held in Dushanbe with participation of 23 UN agencies operating in the country, including WHO. “UN is a reliable development partner of the independent Tajikistan” was the main theme of the conference, which was widely covered in national and international mass media across the country.

The main issues discussed at the press conference included:

  • health systems strengthening;
  • poverty reduction;
  • enhancing economic foundation for sustainable development;
  • cooperation with the civil society.

At the press conference WHO representative underlined importance of strengthening of the national public health services, capable to respond to the current and emerging public health challenges facing the country in the framework of new European policy for health - Health 2020, focusing on the wide action across government and civil society aiming to improve the health and well-being of population, reduce health inequalities and achieve sustainable and well functioning health systems.

It was also announced that on 31 October the United Nations agencies in Tajikistan will host an exhibition promoting the work done by the United Nations throughout the country. During the event a new theatre play “Gift of Migration”, written and staged specially for this purpose, will have its debut performance.
