Participants give blood at a Tajikistan campaign for World Blood Donor Day

WHO joined forces with international partner organizations in Tajikistan to celebrate World Blood Donor Day on 14 June 2013. A campaign to encourage donors to come forward was launched under the slogan: “A drop of blood can save a life”. WHO initiated the campaign in conjunction with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Society of Blood Donor Organizations and the International Society of Blood Transfusion.

At the Blood Bank of the Republic as well as oblast blood donation centres from the cities of Kurgan-tube, Kulyab and Khujand, events were held and more than 1500 people donated blood. With support from WHO, informative materials were developed and donors were given presents of pens, cups and posters during the campaign. Ten regular donors were given the title of “honorary donors”.

Honouring and celebrating donors

Events dedicated to honouring and celebrating donors were broadcast on state and regional television in order to raise the profile of blood donation, attract volunteer donors and make people aware of the criteria and conditions of blood donation.

A speech was made by the Deputy Director of the Blood Bank of the Republic Dr Nurullo Ahuraliev, who reported that each year 20,000 donors in the country give blood for free. The transfusion of blood and blood products saves millions of lives annually and this year marks the 10th Anniversary of World Blood Donor Day.
