Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative (SORT IT) in eastern Europe and central Asia

In line with The Consolidated Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Multidrug- and Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (TB) in the WHO European Region 2011–2015, WHO/Europe together with TDR has been leading the Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative (SORT IT) in eastern Europe and Central Asia in collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières, KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, Union and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The project aims to build the capacity of TB programmes to perform operational research in order to inform policy and practice and improve TB control. This training course comprises 3 workshops, inter-workshop mentorship and support by international experts, and an operational research project led by the participant.

The third workshop of the SORT IT eastern Europe course was held in Tallinn, Estonia 31 March – 5 April 2014, and the course included 11 participants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. All participants successfully completed the course by submitting manuscripts to the peer-reviewed journal "Public Health Action". Accepted articles will be included in a supplement of the journal printed in both English and Russian.

The first 2 workshops of the SORT IT central Asia course were held in Astana, Kazakhstan 23 June – 4 July. These workshops were taught in Russian, and included participants from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The third workshop for this course will be held in 2015.
