18-08-2017On World Humanitarian Day 2017, WHO recognizes the critical and often dangerous humanitarian work of health professionals delivering services to those most in need. It also demands that all parties in conflicts respect the safety and neutrality of health workers and health facilities. Making health care a deliberate target is a major violation of international law that shows a tragic disregard for our common humanity.
Ten surgical supply kits and five trauma kits have arrived in northern Syria, as part of WHO humanitarian and emergency operations. Procured with funding support from the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance, the surgical kits that crossed the border from Turkey last weekend contain medical supplies to cover 1000 emergency interventions and trauma kits to support 500 life-saving interventions. It is the second shipment of medical supplies for northern Syria this year, arranged through the WHO field presence in Gaziantep, Turkey. (04-03-2016)
On 12 August 2014, WHO delivered two surgical supply kits to a hospital in Aleppo, Syria, as part of a UN inter-agency convoy from Turkey to Syria. On World Humanitarian Day, 19 August, we celebrate those performing humanitarian work around the world. (12-08-2014)
