WHO meeting on progress towards Malaria elimination in the European Region, Ashgabat, 2007

On 19 October 2010, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan granted Turkmenistan malaria-free status in an official letter to the Government. This achievement will be published in the WHO “Weekly Epidemiological Record” and marked during the Sixty-fourth World Health Assembly in May 2011.

Turkmenistan is the first country to receive this status among the 10 malaria-affected countries that endorsed the Tashkent Declaration “The Move from Malaria Control to Elimination in the WHO European Region”. The other signatories are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan (in 2005) and the Russian Federation (in 2007).
