Meeting of Interministerial Working Group on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) implementation in Turkmenistan
The first meeting of the Inter-ministerial Working group on the the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) was held at the Ministry of Health on 29 March 2011. The group consists of representatives of different Ministries, including the Ministry of Health and Medical industry, the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Turkmen State Agency for Standardization, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Communications as well as others.
The Head of the WHO Country Office of Turkmenistan made a presentation on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control with detailed information on the main clauses of the document, legal commitments of the parties in regards to the Convention, as well as MPOWER activities on the elimination of tobacco product consumption globally.
Meeting participants presented information on tobacco control activities being undertaken by their ministries. Upon Convention ratification, the country will need to accelerate its efforts on the implementation of Convention clauses for which more closely coordinated activities and joint technical work would be required. In view of this, a proposal to start the development of the joint action plan on the Convention with technical support from WHO was put forth.
