Health minister of Turkmenistan visits WHO/Europe

On 1 May, Dr Gurbanmammet Elyasov, Minister of Health and Medical Industry, met with Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, and other senior staff at WHO/Europe.

After the division directors introduced WHO’s work, discussions focused on planning for a high-level conference on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in Turkmenistan, the new national programme on HIV/AIDS prevention (approved by the Cabinet of Ministers in April) and WHO support to the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry in strengthening health information systems and statistics.

The 2012–2013 biennial collaborative agreement between the Ministry and WHO/Europe includes the following priorities:

  • strengthening health promotion and the prevention of NCDs;
  • improving the control of communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases including through improved capacity to implement the International Health Regulations;
  • harmonizing health information systems; and
  • strengthening the health system.
