WHO experts in Ashgabat on combating the development of antimicrobial resistance

On 19-23 September 2016 a team of WHO experts met in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The objectives of the visit were:

  • to provide recommendations and technical support to the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan on the development of the National Strategy and Action Plan on AMR;
  • to participate in the meeting of the National Coordination Group on AMR; and
  • to conduct a training course for laboratory professionals on laboratory technique issues, such as the response of microorganisms to antimicrobials.

The WHO experts worked with the specialists of the State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance (SSES) on the National Strategy, the National Action plan to combat the development of antimicrobial resistance, as well as the Monitoring and Evaluation plan. On 22 September the WHO experts had met with the National Coordination Group on AMR issues.

The WHO team also provided training on antimicrobial susceptibility testing at the new center of public health and nutrition, which opened in July 2016.
