6th Conference of The Union Europe Region, 5-6 July 2012


Back to back with the 11th Meeting of the WHO Europe National TB Programme Managers, the 6th Conference of The Union Europe Region, “Tuberculosis and lung disease: threats and promises” was held on 5–6 July 2012 (with postgraduate sessions on 4 July).

The President of The Union Europe Region, Dr Jane Carter, opened the meeting with Dr Hans Kluge, Special Representative of the WHO Regional Director on M/XDR-TB.

Dr Hans Kluge highlighted the need to tackle the social determinants of (MDR)TB in line with the WHO Health Policy Health 2020 and the need for solidarity in times of financial crisis, protecting the poor and vulnerable, as stated in the Tallinn Charter on Health System Strengthening (2008). A presentation by Lord Boateng of Akyem and Wembley followed.

This conference brought together renowned experts and focused on approaches to the control of tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases, as well as a wide range of other important issues, including lung disease caused by tobacco, child respiratory disease and the problems caused by pollution.

The venue of the UNION meeting was the Imperial College in London.
