European public health action plan: the second Subregional technical consultation
On 12–14 March, WHO/Europe and EuroHealthNet co-hosted an important consultation on the European Action Plan for Strengthening Public Health Capacities and Services, commonly called the European public health action plan .
The consensus among experts is that there is an urgent need to strengthen public health in Europe. Hans Kluge, Director of Health Systems and Public Health at WHO/Europe, says, “Our goal is that the European public health action plan will lead to concrete improvements in the Region. This consultation will foster debate about the action plan and mobilize key public health actors in the European Region.”
Clive Needle, Director of EuroHealthNet, says, “This consultation and action plan is important and timely, given the need for strong public health systems which both the WHO and [European Union] are looking to help strengthen in challenging times. I am pleased that over 80 delegates from 56 states and organizations will contribute their expertise to this vital process, and that EuroHealthNet can play a helpful partnership role.”
The consultation is the second in a series of informal consultations that are being conducted in parallel to the formal consultation process with WHO Member States.
The final draft of the European public health action plan, incorporating the feedback received in the consultation process, will be submitted to the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in September 2012.
