Public Health in Germany

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina held a Scientific Symposium on “Public Health in Germany – in the context of international structures, developments and global health challenges” in Berlin, Friday 16 March 2012.

Dr Hans Kluge, Director of the Division of Health Systems and Public Health, delivered the key note presentation on “The WHO European Action Plan on Public Health 2012-2015”. The 2 other key note presentations were given by Professor Antoine Flahault, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique and Mrs Liene Matthiesen, Unit Head, European Commission Directorate Research and Innovation.

This initiative on Public Health in Germany is led by Professor Detlev Ganten from the Charité Leopoldina; and has the following objectives:

  • The development of public health in Germany. This includes a brief international overview and analysis of the scientific basis and structures of public health and global health;
  • To foster the further development of public health science and the corresponding new academic structures in Germany with an emphasis on the education of public health professionals;
  • To stimulate public awareness of the urgent health problems in Germany; and
  • To stimulate the awareness of the role which Germany is expected to play at an international level and improve the structures which are needed to assume such a role.
