Strengthening Uzbekistan’s health system through improvement of maternal and child health services

WHO/Europe and the Uzbek Ministry of Health organized orientation meetings with key stakeholders in pilot regions of the country on 28–30 October 2013 to present WHO tools and discuss proposed activities of a joint WHO/United Nation’s Children’s Fund project on Improvement of the Mother and Child Health Services (IMCHS) in Uzbekistan. WHO also presented a joint activities framework at national level and in pilot regions at a meeting of the National Maternal and Child Health Coordination Committee organized by the Ministry of Health on November 1.

WHO provides technical assistance on implementation of an institutional strengthening component of the IMCHS project (Phase II), which is funded by the European Union. The main objective of this component is to provide technical advice for strengthening the health system’s capacity in maternal and child health through the use of WHO-developed guidelines and tools.

WHO is implementing this health system strengthening approach in two pilot regions of Uzbekistan:  Namangan oblast and Republic of Karakalpakstan.
