Achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on improving Child and Maternal Health and Gender Equality in the WHO European Region

WHO meeting in Durres, Albania, 28–30 September 2010

Government officials, UN agencies and other partners from more than 25 countries are convening in Durres, Albania these days to review the progress in achieving MDGs 3, 4 and 5 in the WHO European Region.

Among the goals of the meeting are to identify immediate and long-term actions for the reduction of child mortality and improvement of maternal health in the region with an emphasis on how gender inequalities impact on the achievement of MDG 4 and 5.

The meeting, organized by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, will disseminate best practices and discuss challenges and progress at country level in achieving high, sustained and equitable coverage of effective interventions aimed at reducing maternal, newborn and child mortality. The meeting will highlight how to address and act upon gender and socioeconomic inequities within child and maternal health programmes.
