First step to stronger collaboration with UNFPA
WHO/Europe works closely with the United Nations Population Fund Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Office (UNFPA EECARO) in a broad range of areas, such as sexual and reproductive health; maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health and rights; gender equality and human rights; HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections; and the health of vulnerable groups, particularly Roma. WHO/Europe and UNFPA EECARO developed and have jointly published the European magazine for sexual and reproductive health, “Entre Nous”, for more than 25 years.
On 3 December 2012, Werner Haug, Regional Director of UNFPA EECARO, met Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, to discuss strengthening strategic collaboration between the two agencies. Building on the existing partnership, they discussed exploring new areas of joint work relevant to Health 2020, including information systems and evidence for decision-making, ageing and essential health supplies.
They also agreed that both agencies would work closely together in developing goals for development after 2015 (the target date for the Millennium Development Goals).
Dr Rita Columbia, Reproductive Health Adviser and Ms Marta Diavolova, Strategic Partnerships Specialist, UNFPA EECARO, and Dr Nedret Emiroglu, Deputy Director, Division of Communicable Diseases, Health Security and Environment and other senior WHO/Europe managers joined the regional directors in discussions.
The agencies will develop a strategic partnership agreement to strengthen technical, strategic and policy collaboration. It will set down a common approach to sharing information in advance about activities of common interest, enable information exchange on networks and resources, including WHO experts and collaborating centres, and establish a basis for developing joint action plans.
