Joint HIV technical mission to Greece: report released

A substantial increase in the number of HIV cases related to injecting drug use had prompted Greek authorities to approach the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and WHO/Europe for technical assistance in 2012.

A team of experts visited Greece in May 2012 and worked together with Greek counterparts on evaluating the state of the response to the HIV epidemic, important gaps and priority actions. The experts came from ECDC, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and WHO/Europe, while the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) joined the mission as observers.

The mission report is now available, outlining key recommendations for response and putting at the centre those measures necessary to break the transmission cycle, namely the expanded provision of sterile injecting equipment and opioid substitution therapy.
