HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination in the health care sector in Belarus

New research supported by WHO/Europe suggests that stigma and discrimination are barriers to effective HIV treatment and care in Belarus.

A paper presented at the 14th European AIDS Conference held 16-19 October 2013 in Brussels reveals that 40% of people living with HIV in Belarus experienced disclosure of their diagnosis and confidentiality breach by health care workers and 15% were refused medical care.

Eliminating stigma and discrimination is an important objective of the WHO European Action Plan for HIV/AIDS 2012-2015.
