Human infections with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus in China – update 4

WHO/Europe’s fourth update on the outbreak of avian influenza A(H7N9) virus summarizes the latest information relevant to the WHO European Region, including:

  • The recommendations of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) mission to China;
  • an update of the WHO biosafety risk assessment and guidelines for the production and quality control of human influenza vaccines against avian influenza A(H7N9) virus;
  • a summary of the development and availability of avian influenza A(H7N9) candidate vaccine viruses (10 May 2013);
  • an updated WHO risk assessment on human infections with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus (10 May 2013);
  • the interim WHO surveillance recommendations for human infection with the virus (10 May 2013); and
  • interim recommendations on biorisk management for laboratories handling human specimens suspected or confirmed to contain avian influenza A(H7N9) virus causing human disease (10 May 2013).
