MERS-CoV update: new cases bring global total to 64

As of 17 June 2013, 64 laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been reported to WHO, including 38 deaths.

The most recent cases have been reported in Saudi Arabia. Globally, cases have been reported in Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as 4 countries in the WHO European Region: France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. All European and North African cases had a recent travel history to the Middle East or had been in close contact with laboratory-confirmed or probable cases.

The newest cases reported indicate that the source of infection remains active in the Middle East and is present throughout a large area. The appearance of cases in countries of Europe and North Africa, but not in others with frequent travellers to and from the Middle East, is likely a result of differences in surveillance and testing.
