Health care workers: protect yourselves and patients from influenza

Flu: the 5 things everyone needs to know

Health care workers, especially nurses, are at high risk of getting influenza because of the nature of their jobs. Patients are often at high risk of complications if they get influenza. Health care workers may not realize they are infected with influenza and can pass the virus on to the patients for whom they care.

Nevertheless, health care workers’ uptake of seasonal influenza vaccination is low across the WHO European Region. WHO hopes to use Flu Awareness Day, 6 November 2013, to raise awareness of the importance of seasonal influenza vaccination for health care workers. They should consider getting an influenza shot as part of their jobs.
