Novel coronavirus update: new case but continued low risk

The United Kingdom has reported a confirmed infection of the novel coronavirus (NCoV) in a relative of the case reported on 11 February 2013. This latest case is a resident of the United Kingdom who does not have a recent travel history and is understood to have a pre-existing medical condition that may have increased susceptibility to respiratory infections.

As of 13 February 2013, a total of 11 confirmed cases of human infection with NCoV has been notified to WHO, with no change in the number of fatalities: that is, 5 deaths since April 2012.

Although this case is suggestive of person-to-person transmission, on the basis of current evidence, the risk of sustained person-to-person transmission appears to be very low.

WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event, and does not recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied.
