Euro Polio Page

Globally, poliomyelitis (polio) surveillance depends upon the detection, reporting, and thorough epidemiologic and laboratory investigation of cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), which describes a sudden onset of paralysis, as might be found with polio.

Weekly data on AFP surveillance sent to the WHO Regional Office for Europe were used to monitor the progress, quality and performance of national and regional AFP surveillance programmes. The data were also used to publish the monthly newsletter, “Euro Polio Page,” which documented the status of AFP surveillance in Member States, highlighted achievements and made recommendations for strengthening surveillance and laboratory support. It was replaced by “EURO Immunization Monitor” in 2008.
