Strengthening cross-border collaboration on malaria elimination
In the context of malaria elimination, particular emphasis should be given to situations, where there is a risk of spread of malaria between countries.
In March 2009, an inter-country meeting between Azerbaijan and Georgia was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, to promote and facilitate joint efforts aimed at malaria elimination in both countries. A joint statement on malaria elimination between the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia was signed, and it was supported by WHO/Europe and the Global Fund. An action plan to scale up cross-border collaboration was discussed and agreed upon at the second meeting between two countries which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia, in April 2010. In June 2010, the national Governments, in close cooperation with WHO/Europe and the Global Fund, launched a large-scale campaign to eliminate malaria in border areas of both countries.
In November 2009, an inter-country meeting between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan took place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, with the aim to strengthen cross-border collaboration on issues of direct relevance to malaria elimination. A joint statement on malaria elimination between the Ministry of Health of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Health of Afghanistan was signed, and it was supported by WHO/Europe and WHO/Eastern Mediterranean Region. At present, the two countries work together to scale up the agreed activities in border areas. A second meeting to further discuss cross-border activities is to be organized in the border areas of Afghanistan in March-April 2011.
In October 2010, an inter-country meeting on malaria elimination between Tajikistan and Afghanistan has been organized by the Ministries of Health of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, in close cooperation with WHO/Europe, WHO/Eastern Mediterranean Region and the Global Fund. It is held in Kurgan-Tujbe, Tajikistan, and it is expected that a joint statement on malaria elimination and an action plan will be discussed and agreed upon.
In November 2010, a cross-border meeting on malaria elimination among Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and will be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. It is supported technically and financially by WHO/Europe and the Global Fund. It is expected that a joint statement on malaria elimination and an action plan will be discussed and agreed upon.
