Lessons on “healthy lifestyles and malaria” given in various schools to mark World Malaria Day 2012 were among several activities organized in Turkmenistan to raise public awareness on malaria prevention. Other activities included contests organized by medical professionals and students to test participants’ knowledge about malaria and articles published in the media.

The Interagency Coordination Committee (ICC) of the National Malaria Programme also held a meeting devoted to World Malaria Day on 25 April 2012 at the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan. ICC members discussed progress in implementation of the National Plan of Action to Prevent Re-introduction of Malaria Transmission for 2010-2015 and the National Plan on Prevention and Control of Leishmaniasis for 2012-2015.

The ICC was established by the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan in 2005 to regulate intersectoral collaboration, taking into account the broad nature of the malaria problem and the necessity for action from various institutions and agencies. ICC is comprised of representatives from the Ministry of Health (the principal implementer of the programme), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, State Migration Service of Turkmenistan, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Nature Protection, State Border Service of Turkmenistan, Ministry of Culture, the TV and Radio Broadcasting company of Turkmenistan and various other agencies.
