West Nile virus confirmed in Portugal for first time
On 14 September 2015, the first confirmed case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Portugal was notified to WHO/Europe. Even though the presence of WNV is known in Portugal, where three previous probable cases were reported (two in 2004 and one in 2010), this is the first laboratory-confirmed case that fully meets the European Union case definition for WNV.
Portuguese national and local health authorities performed the necessary epidemiological, serological and clinical investigations. They also informed the public and health professionals, took actions to ensure blood safety, and set up mosquito control actions.
