New publication on electronic cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are novel products emerging on the market recently. Consequently, there are only few scientific studies on the health implications of using electronic cigarettes.
There is a general consensus that electronic cigarettes need to be better regulated. The Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) deliberated on this issue during the 5th session in Seoul, Republic of Korea in November 2012.
In order to support the process of opinion formation around the various possible options of regulation, the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) has issued the present report, which evaluates currently available studies on product quality of electronic cigarettes, potential health implications and their usefulness as tobacco cessation aids.
