European Immunization Week 2012: all countries set to take part
WHO/Europe today received confirmation that for the first time since European Immunization Week was introduced in 2005, all 53 countries in the WHO European Region will participate in the initiative. This emphasizes the Region’s commitment to raising awareness about immunization and spreading the central message of European Immunization Week: Prevent. Protect. Immunize.
This year, European Immunization Week takes place from 21 to 27 April, and countries will organize immunization activities at national level. In past years, these activities have ranged from conducting supplementary immunization activities or catch-up immunization campaigns to developing and disseminating public information materials, organizing conferences and health worker training on immunization, launching innovative communication tools such as iPhone applications and others.
Health workers in focus
This year, WHO/Europe is emphasizing the critical role frontline health workers play in ensuring the success of national immunization programmes. In connection with this, the Regional Office has recently launched an online immunization resource centre where health workers can download job aids to assist in their daily communication with patients about immunization.
In 2012, European Immunization Week will take place simultaneously with immunization weeks in all WHO regions, marking the first ever World Immunization Week.
