9th annual meeting and 4th conference of HEPA Europe

The European network for the promotion of health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA Europe) held its 4th conference and 9th annual meeting in Helsinki, Finland, on 22-24 October 2013.

The event was attended by 230 participants representing organizations from 25 countries, and was kindly hosted by Finland's Fit for Life Program (KKI) and the UKK Institute for Health Promotion Research.

The meeting featured keynote lectures on measurement of physical activity, health effects of sedentary behaviour and injury prevention. It also included an overview of the most recent policy developments in the area of physical activity promotion.

These included presentations on:

  • Finland's “On the move – national strategy for physical activity promoting health and wellbeing 2020” by Riitta Kaivosoja, Director General of the Ministry of Education and Culture;
  • WHO activities on physical activity promotion and noncomunnicable diseases (NCDs) prevention, by Dr João Breda, Programme Manager, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity, WHO/Europe;
  • European Commission activities on HEPA promotion, by Yves Le Lostecque, Head of Sport Unit, DG Education and Culture of the European Commission.

In addition, HEPA Europe adopted its new work programme 2013-2014 and elected Tommi Vasankari, Director of the UKK institute as its new Chair.
