Guidance for surveillance, early warning and response systems to outbreaks of water-related diseases

Art. 8 of the Protocol refers to assess and strengthen the surveillance capacity for water-related diseases, including data management and to promote and enable participation in international surveillance programmes. Activities under this article include the preparation of guidance on good practice in national and international systems for surveillance, early warning and notification.

A dedicated Task Force was established in 2007 to develop guidance for surveillance, early warning and response systems to outbreaks of water-related diseases, and to implement country assistance programmes. Such programmes should provide training to country officials and test the effectiveness of the guidance.

The Task Force is also an important instrument to help prevent and significantly reduce child morbidity and mortality from gastrointestinal disorders and other health effects - one of the four priority goals of the WHO Children’s Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe.
