Strengthening cancer prevention and screening in Belarus

One of the aims of the 2010-2011 Biennial Collaborative Agreement between WHO/Europe and the Ministry of Health of Belarus is a strengthened national programme for cancer prevention and control. With WHO/Europe’s help, a national cervical and breast cancer screening policy for the early diagnostics of pre-cancer and cancer will be developed and implemented.

A mission consisting of leading WHO and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) experts on breast cancer and cervix cancer control will take place 16-17 February 2011. The main objectives of this mission are to assess current situation on respective screening programmes and advise on improvements to make cancer control in these particular areas more effective and efficient. During the mission there will be meetings with national stakeholders including oncologists, surgeons, pathologists and primary health care providers. A round-table discussion to draft a project proposal for potential donors is also planned.
