The WHO European Region leads the world in plans, policies and strategies to address cancer. A WHO report shows that over 90% of European countries have developed such plans.

In addition, 92% of countries in the Region have cancer registries. These are critical to capturing high-quality information on the numbers and types of cases, so that effective national policies for cancer control can be developed, implemented and evaluated.

WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) introduced the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (GICR). A first regional hub was launched in Mumbai, India, in 2012; the second in Izmir, Turkey, will become operational in 2013.

World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day is marked on 4 February each year. Initiated by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), it calls on people, organizations and government agencies around the world to unite in the fight against the global cancer epidemic. The 2013 campaign focuses on addressing the myths surrounding cancer.
